Tux
Heya all, hope things are going well for you.
I've gotten an itch to muck around with my laptop and I'd like to get back into beginner software development.
I have limited experience with (C64 Basic lol, Java, C++, and VB). I haven't done anything in years, and I see all these new languages and feel sooo behind.
I downloaded Netbeans IDE for windows and thought about getting familiar with Java and C++ again.
But, in the past I preferred to develop stuff in a linux enviro.
Any suggestions on a good linux distro and a language that a newbie could learn?
Take care all,
~Faron
p.s. BC (that adorable dog I posted sitting next to me) had to be put to sleep 2 weeks ago. The poor thing had stomach cancer. I'll definitely miss her.

Hi Faron! Sorry to hear about your dog.
Linux-wise, you can get a free copy of Ubuntu at www.ubuntu.com I played with an earlier version of it, I need to get a current copy... I give it the thumbs-up.

Re: Tux
Ubuntu is by far the most popular distro for budding coders and has a large user following. Redhat is still the most popular distro for Enterprises.
I use both, Ubuntu is running on my EEE(eeebuntu) and I use Redhat at work.
You might also want to look into .net programming/scripting. Windows has been based on this since XP rolled and even more so with Windows 7/Server 2008.
It all depends on your end goal, if it's for fun or web developing for money, then Linux coding is good. If your looking for a career and steady income, then .net is the way to go (web development with it as well).
FYI, Sun Solaris Admins are still getting top dollar and they're all getting old

My fav. thing about Ubuntu are the variety of ways to run it. From LiveCD to USB Key to dual boot with Windows.
I highly recommend it

Re: Tux
Thanks for all the advice!
I ended up trying a bunch of linux distro's. Right now I'm running opensuse. Both Ubuntu and suse were easy to install (with 1 or 2 issues that were resolved). I was hoping to get Xen running both suse and vista but I don't have enough money....I mean memory.
I'll probably never make a career out of writing code, I just have so much catching up to do. Though, I've got an opportunity to get back in the lab and write code for automated experiments. We usually use windows for experiments and linux for data analysis. So I'd like to learn some new skills ^.^ Skills that involve setting up a web server so you can review the status of hardware during the experiment and see the data taken.
